The impact of foreign direct investment on gender inequality in India

This paper examines the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on female employment and wages in India. Using both household-level plant-level data, it estimates impact industry-level FDI inflows employment, gender wage gap for skilled unskilled workers. Further, whether there are any “cultural transfers” or spillovers terms norms from more gender-equal countries through this FDI. In order to estimate this, a weighted Gender Inequality Index (GII) is created. The main findings that although leads an increase workers, worsens gap. no strong evidence cultural may be explained by fact multinational enterprises choose adopt local institutions successful developing-country markets, thereby losing some their ownership advantages.
